The One Strong Ohana Campaign - Awareness and Prevention of Child Abuse in Hawaii

The One Strong Ohana Campaign is a child abuse public awareness campaign for residents of Hawaii  launched by the Hawaii Children's Trust Fund and the Joyful Heart Foundation. 80% of Hawaii residents think that child abuse and neglect is a problem and that two thirds of those surveyed say it is difficult to identify signs of child abuse.

Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, a private non-profit organization is one of many strong supporters of the One Strong Ohana Campaign. Aileen Deese, Executive Director of Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, elaborates more on the One Strong Ohana campaign in an interview with Sharon Simms of the Hawaii Children's Trust Fund.

Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii was started by a group of human service providers who became convinced the community needed a voice dedicated to child abuse and neglect.  In 1982, this group became the Hawaii Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America and in 1987, became a participating agency of Aloha United Way.
Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse in all its forms and to ensuring that every child in the state of Hawaii is able to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.

All programs are designed for the general public and center around providing parents and caregivers with the support and skills they need to perform as effectively as possible.
Our mission is to prevent child abuse through education, public awareness and advocacy which promote positive parenting and healthy families where children are valued and loved.

As part of a national movement to stop child abuse and neglect before it occurs, Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, Department of Health, and the Child Abuse Prevention Planning Council, a committee of private, state and federal organizations, sponsor Child Abuse Prevention Month during April each year. April is devoted to the issue of child abuse prevention because of its high incidence of child abuse.
