The rights of a child begins when he/she is in his/her mother's womb. The
unborn child needs proper nutrition he/she gets through his or her mother and a clean
environment. This is the first right of the
unborn child.
And when a child comes out to the world, they need
proper care and attention. As this year's observance of the Child
Abuse Prevention Month comes to a close, each child should be the focus of our attention as the year continues.
Are they given proper care, do they grow well in an environment suited
to enhance their talents, do they get the family support they need for
them to grow as responsible adults?
Everything starts from the home,
from the child's family. If a child's mother is in good physical and mental
health during inception, their chances increase to develop good health, good
emotional intelligence, and everything good will follow. If the family
is happy when their still children, the child is likely to grow happy and have
self confidence too. A contented family, with the parents respecting the
rights of each other, helping, supporting each other, will likely have
children who are also contented. They would learn to cope with life
well, no matter what their status in life is, whether they are rich or
poor. It is the family pride, the family's reputation that has a major influence on what road a child would take in the future.
What your
child sees in you as parents, usually is the right thing to
do in their eyes. Be good role models. It is nice if they would find
good friends who could influence them to be a good person also, but it
would be regrettable if they found friends who doesn't have their best interest at heart,
who could led them astray. But if the child was molded to be a strong
person, with good values inculcated to him by his parents, no amount of
bad companies could influence him or her. Remember to keep the communication lines
between you and your child open. Ask them how he/she is doing in school, if
their being bullied, if their grades are alright.
Respect their privacy.
In these times when there are so much news about children who become
victims of sexual abuse, more so with the use of the internet, through
child pornography, it is the guardian who can be the prime watchdogs.
If there are suspicion of trouble in the home it is the community or the institutions involved in
strengthening families that could take active steps to prevent child abuse or neglect.
Livelihood opportunities should be provided to families to support their needs as a part of child abuse prevention month and beyond. This can increase their chances of having a much better environment to raise their children well. In the month of April,
Child Abuse Prevention Month, there are several programs, that is displayed on Hawaii Childrens Trust Fund website for family fun and events.
