Vacation is over, and school will start soon.

Vacation is over, and school will start soon.

This phase could either be jittery, or full of excitement both for parents and children, so parents, be ready to make school opening a very memorable and a learning experience for your child. Here are some of the back to school tips to achieve this goal.

Take your child to the school before the school opens. Let him or her be oriented or be familiar with the surroundings, the school building, the rooms where he or she will go, visit the room assigned to her, let him or her sit at a desk, roam around the room, the locker area, see the comfort room, the cafeteria, the playground and other amenities inside the campus. Let him or her have a feel of how it is to be a pupil/student.

Meet the teachers. It is better to introduce the child to his or her teacher-in-charge so they can already be comfortable with him or her when classes start. You can also tell the teacher something about your child, like his or her behavior at home, how you deal with him or her when they have tantrums or problems, etc. so the teacher will know how to approach your child in such instances.

Get the contact information of the teacher and the Guidance Counselor, and the school guards for emergency purposes. Likewise give them your contact numbers.

Talk to your child how he or she felt about the school and their future teacher. Tell them how you were when you were as young as him or her, and how you coped with that new phase in your life. Let them know that it is just a beginning and do not be afraid of new people he or she will meet like his or her classmates and new friends. Tell ther that children can be of different behaviors, some of them could be so timid and shy, while others can be dominant or bullies. Remind him or her to avoid the latter as much as possible, and if he or she was bullied, tell the teacher or tell the parent about it.
Encourage the child to talk and be open about bullying.

It is best to let the child help in preparing for his or her school bag, her notebooks, pens, paper, pencils, and other paraphernalia, so he or she would be excited to use and bring it to school. Likewise, get his or her school uniform and shoes ready.

On the night before the first day of class, sleep early, both the parents and the child. Get up early and give ample time allowance for travel, so the child will be early for his or her class. It will prevent rush walks, etc, that can make the child nervous. Also be cool and speak casually though the parent could be irritated or have some problems encountered.

If the child sees the parent as confident and happy, he or she can imbibe that feeling as she goes to school. After the first day, let the child talk about how was his or her first day in school. Just listen and take actions if needed be. Even after weeks, months of schooling, parents must allow an open conversation with the child regarding his or her studies, how he or she is performing in school.
